Walter Harris Callow Foundation

The Walter Harris Callow Foundation was established to honour the legacy of Walter Callow, a humanitarian and veteran of the First World War, who invented the first wheelchair bus in Canada to serve the needs of veterans confined in Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For more than 70 years, Callow Wheelchair Buses provided service to veterans and others with mobility challenges. Today, the Foundation continues to support veterans, military, RCMP and their families by directing proceeds of the Foundation to their highest priority needs.

Our Mission: to further Walter Callow’s legacy to support veterans, military, RCMP and their families in becoming engaged citizens in our society.

Walter Callow's Story

Walter Callow was a remarkable humanitarian and inventor who put the very first wheelchair accessible bus on the road in Halifax in 1947.

Walter Callow was born in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. During the First World War, he suffered a severe back injury that would eventually confine him to Camp Hill Hospital for veterans. By 1939, he was completely confined to his bed and blind.

Nevertheless, he turned his creative energies to assisting confined veterans and others with physical disabilities. The result was the specially designed and equipped Callow wheelchair coach which first hit the road in 1947.

Callow Wheelchair Buses operated for more than 70 years and served hundreds of veterans and mobility challenged Nova Scotians. Read more about Walter’s incredible legacy.
